Are you torn between choosing a powerful kit and a road-legal kit?
Well, have both in one!

The UK/EU regulations dictate that a kit must not exceed the rated power of 250W to be road-legal. Which is not great news for the thrill-seekers, power hungry among us who want to have the occasional fun off-road yet still be able to ride sensibly and legally on-road. A purchase of the common high-powered kit will come with its legal implications. On the other hand, the practicality of a road-legal kit means giving up the fun one could have off-road. So which kit do you choose?

With these new rear wheel kits, CycloTricity had set out to resolve this very dilemma for its customers. We have developed a unique system that allows the user to swap between two modes depending on whether you are on-road or off-road, allowing you to unlock the full power where it is safe and legal to do so.
This dual-mode system is embedded in the LCD Dashboard which can unlock the full power of the kit using a special code (this can be obtained upon signing the de-restriction terms of use).
Please note that this is not the same as a de-restriction switch which has been questionable from a legal standpoint.

We’ve gone to extraordinary lengths to ensure you get the most out of your conversion kit purchase, with the most robust and durable components today’s technology has to offer. All at arguably the best value for money kits found in the UK.

Electric bike kit specifications:

  • Motor: 1000W gearless brushless rear hub motor, comes integrated in a wheel size of your choice.
  • Restricted to 250W and 25km/h by default as a road-legal kit
  • LCD Screen
  • 1000W mode reaches maximum speed of 50km/h (31mph) once de-restricted (requires 48V battery)
  • Wheel size: 26inch, 700c, 28inch or 29er
  • Wheel material: Double walled alloy rim with reinforced spokes to withstand extra pressure.
  • Throttle: thumb type – gradual lever, the further it is pressed, the more power is provided.
  • Brake levers: Electric levers that also cut the power when applied.
  • Controller: 30A current
  • Cables: Motor cable and system cable (designed for simplicity and minimal wiring)
  • Bag: for mounting the controller
  • Brake compatibility: Compatible with both disc brakes and V-brakes
  • Fork compatibility: 135mm between fork drop-outs (which is the vast majority of rear forks that are suitable for a derailleur)

Apart from a battery, the above is all that is needed to fully convert a bicycle into an electric bike. All our kit packages include these essential items. All you need to add is a battery (and the optional PAS upgrade if required).

Pedal Assist System Upgrades

Why not upgrade your conversion kit by adding our optional Pedal Assistance Systems (PAS)?  A Pedal Assistance System is a device that senses your pedalling and makes your kit give automatic assistance, i.e. you do not have to press the throttle throughout your journey. It consists of an advanced LCD handlebar monitor which, not only gives you five levels of power, but also displays your speed, journey distance, time, average speed and many other readings.The LCD computer is required to unlock the full power of 1000W for off-road use.

Although these are optional upgrades, you are highly recommended to install a Pedal Assistance System as it will transform your riding experience and improve the longevity of the battery.

IMPORTANT: If you wish to include a Pedal Assistance System with your eKit, the bottom bracket on your bike needs to be a Square Taper type (which is the most common bottom bracket on ordinary bikes). If you don’t have a square taper bottom bracket, you may need to replace it as well as the crank arms to make your bike compatible with the PAS. If in doubt, please consult a bike service shop on how to fit a square taper bottom bracket on your bike.
Alternatively, you may opt for purchasing the LCD Dashboard only without the PAS if you want the de-restriction functions but prefer not to fiddle with your bottom bracket.

Which kit is right for me?

The most cost effective strategy in a kit purchase is working out in advance what you’ll generally use it for. That way, you can pick a variation suitable for your needs without adding unnecessary costs. Front and rear drive kits both have their own unique characteristics. We have divided our kits into three categories that generally cover the needs of most people. To help you narrow down what’s right for you, here is a summary of the major differences of this particular kit compared to its other two counterparts:

1000W Rear Drive
This category has been developed purely for the thrill seekers among us. Since it’s a 48V system, the battery makes it more costly than its counterparts. Having said that, it offers an adrenaline fueled ride rarely found in conversion kits. Unlike the 500W version which was mainly created for on-road use (and some occasional off-road fun), this kit has been purely developed for an enhanced off-road experience packed with torque and power. This kit will propel you to speeds up to 50km/h (31mph) and climb incredibly steep hills.
This kit is recommended for the outdoorsy spirit, the mountain biker and you who appreciate the exhilaration that comes with speed and power. We’ve developed this configuration specifically for you and made this kit especially to satisfy the thrill you seek!
Please note that the kit will be supplied restricted to 250W by default and requires the LCD to de-restrict it to the full 1000W for off-road use.

Things to think about before purchasing this rear drive conversion kit:

– The rear drive motors are only compatible with a 3speed, 5speed, 6speed, 7speed, 8speed, 9speed or 10speed freewheels (not compatible with a cassette type sprocket, i.e. if your bike is fitted with a cassette, you can purchase a freewheel togther with your kit for it to fit). If you have a single speed bike, you can install a 3speed freewheel for compatibility (and use only one of the 3 speeds).

– The rear forks on your bike need to have 135mm clearance between the drop-outs (which is the case with the vast majority of bikes)

– The LCD computer is necessary to unlock the full power of these high power motors. We include this as standard with the rear conversion kits.

– The electric brake levers supplied with the kits are mechanical.* I.e. they are not compatible with hydraulic brakes or brakes that are combined with gear levers. However, installing the brake levers are not a necessity and the kit will work fine without them. Moreover, the throttle is spring-loaded, i.e. it will cut the power whenever the thumb is released from it for safety.

*Note: Kits are no longer supplied with brake levers. They are now only available upon request. Most users do not fit them however if you have mechanical brakes which are not integrated into the gear levers and definitely want to fit them then just let us know in the notes section when ordering.

Frame Battery

With its sleek design, the frame battery is made to pack an enormous amount of power in a small package. It’s mounting position on the bike down-tube creates a low centre of gravity for light manoeuvrability and an enhanced feeling of an overall lighter electric bike. Available in two versions:

– Suitable for our 1000W motor system
– Up to 30miles on one charge*
– Range could drop down to 15miles once de-restricted to full power
–USB Port: Active

– Suitable for our 1000W motor system
– Up to 40miles on one charge*
– Range could drop down to 20miles once de-restricted to full power
-USB Port: Inactive

Pannier Rack Battery

With its high capacity cells, the Pannier Rack Battery is all about reliability and range. Provided with its own free rack, it makes for great practical use and can be turned completely inconspicuous when covered with pannier bags.
If you intend on converting a step-through bike, this is almost certainly the most suitable option for your conversion:

– Suitable for our 1000W motor system
– Up to 30miles on one charge*
– Range could drop down to 15miles once de-restricted to full power
-USB Port: None

*Range mentioned are based on optimum cycling conditions and can vary depending on various factors such as restricted mode, pedal assist settings, number of stops/starts, tyre pressure, terrain and the weight of the cyclist. Based on restricted 250W mode only.


Torque Arm

This is an optional extra however it’s highly recommended on higher power conversions.

Torque arms are there to help your bicycle’s dropouts (the part of the bike that holds onto the axles of the wheels) resist the torque of an electric hubmotor. Normal bicycle wheels don’t apply much torque to the bicycle dropouts. When you add a high power motor there can be much more torque applied than the the dropouts were originally designed to take.
